malware bytes is awsome,
also try AVG it has a free version that knocks the pants off many high end anti-virus programs.

@zphantom
I know what you mean about AVG - I use the free version on my machines at home!

I got McAfee Security Centre free for three months on my laptop - I was quite impressed with that too!

On the same topic if you are offered a product called AntiVirus 2008/2009, XPAntiVirus 2008/2009 or any simmilar do not download or install, especially if it shows you a website or the "my computer" folder of your pc with several warnings of viruses, spam or other malware.

Its a nasty little piece of scareware that serves no purpose other than to annoy and make computer geeks charge a fortune to remove it.  Though one of the latest versions also stops your internet browser working correctly.

When dowloaded it usually shows as a red circle or shield with a white cross (looking more "gel" than the official windows one. )  If you have it to this stage try using malware bytes as detailed above.  If that dosnt work its probably tied up in the registry - unless you know what your doing dont play around in there.  theres a useful program called HijackThis which although will not remove the affected files will allow people who are familliar with the registry to help you get rid of anything like that.

yeh i've removed it from 4 machines now,  problem is its an adaptive program so what works on one may not work on all. (its a smart little bugger)

as a rough guide: <advanced users>

start computer in safe mode, with admin rights,

stop all related processes. (shouldnt be any but always worth checking)

Search for and delete any programs named AntiVirusPro, Antivirus Pro (2008/2009) AVPro, AntiVirus (2008/2009) Pro or derivitives

regedit and del following:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Antivirus
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Antivirus
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\”Antivirus” = “%ProgramFiles%\Antivirus 2008 Pro\Antvrs.exe”

then run MalwareBytes, AVG, and Spybot as a minimum,  also anything else you have in your arsenal.  Some people like Spyhunter and its good, but costs and i've only had a 50% sucess rate with it.

Anything after that can vary anywhere between IE hijack and unnasigned string arg[] problems (or one sweet little version that adds VIRUS ALERT!!! beside your system clock [always beware of anything with 3 exclamation marks!!!])

More than that requires a system specific log and a days play.

----UPDATE-----

just found this release from micro$oft:

Microsoft claims that December's version of the Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) -- the free utility included in Windows Update every month -- specifically targeted "Antivirus 2009." According to Microsoft, MSRT removed the rogue application from over 394,000 PCs in the first nine days after it was released on December 9.

Last month Microsoft claimed it purged programs called "Advanced Antivirus," "Ultimate Antivirus 2008," and "XPert Antivirus" from almost a million PCs. This month, Microsoft targeted the Win32/FakeXPA family (including Win32/Yektel and Win32/FakeXPA) which include fake security software called "Antivirus XP," "AntivirusXP 2008," and "Antivirus 2009." (Source: technet.com)

so theres hope for it yet, should be pointed out ths wont remove all versions of the program but its a start.

My PC recently got infected by Spyware Guard 2008, a trojan built by some amateurs which installs a professionally written virus which disables Hijack This, Malware Bytes Anti Malware, Process Explorer and loads of other tools I'd normally use to clean it up.

Sophos wasn't detecting anything, but the following program is a wonder:
ComboFix
Ignore the ads on the site - the program takes ages but does the job. It MUST be run from your desktop. I'm not sure if it is Vista compatible, but it fixed my XP machine right up!
Retroman!

I swear by these AVG (free) Ad-ware (free) and Winpatrol (free version) with the little doggie who patrols your computer, cute, but it works well. :)

I use AVG free at home, AVG full at work for our server - absolutely superb software - doesn't slow your machine down like some other software I could mention . . . :(

Heres another good piece of software which I have had on my computer for a while.

http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/

It doesnt seem to slow my computer down or anything and is a good way of keeping things up to date and secure.

I use Malwarebytes clean computers too, best thing to do is to reformat the pc. I know it's not always an option.
