Hello guys! Grin

I write and record songs/music in my spare time and over the last 3 years have been interested in themes and soundtrack composition. Films/games/shows....how the music builds atmosphere, drama, fear, saddness, joy etc.

I'm currently playing with a few ideas and wondered what you all considered good game soundtracks both old and new...and why you love them!

I really loved the recent Super Mario Galaxy (1) soundtrack and thought the move to orchestral music was a great idea....but I think even some of the melodies on many of my NES games still hold a certain charm that could only be suited to the NES sounds.

I'd love to hear what you guys like!

Cheers  Grin

Soundtracks are a great point for a game . . .
Shadow of the Beast, Wrath of the Demon and stuff like that was very scene setting.
One of my favourite Amiga Demos by Alcatraz called Odyssey is superb too . . .
I love all music to be honest (apart from Jazz, Country and Jungle!)
Obviously soundtracks in movies are superb too . . . John Williams being one of the best. Although I do like Brad Fidel who did the Terminator music! Wink

So many games, demos and remixes to choose from, but here are a few favorites original games tunes. -

Main menu theme from Flashback (has to be the Amiga version though)

Any of the level tunes from the PCEngine/Arcade version of Wonderboy In Monsterland.

I think everyone loves a bit of The Last Ninja on the C64 don't they?

Many many C64 loader music such as the Ocean Loaders, Robocop, Target Renegade & the crunchy guitars of Skate or Die loader.

....and oddly enought, level 2 on Final Fight 3 on the Snes, tis a foot tapping tastic tune!

oh and Bubble Bobble, but i can only stand it for a short periods :-)

Being a musician myself I also enjoy game music. My favorites include Last ninja 2 (c64), Monty on the run (c64) and Shadow of the beast (Amiga) purely for the atmosphere they create.

Love the SID on the C64, was the machine that influenced me to start writing music myself, so owe it alot, 1st soundtracks I heared were gyruss, frantic freddie, and alot of Bogg demos, then of course got into the mighty Rob Hubbard, Martin Galway, Ben Daglish soundtracks, inevitable I guess, but the sound of the SID, even today can make the hairs on the arms stand up. I still listen regular to all the classics, and all sound as fresh today as they did back in the day.

Still use the C64 today as a synth, using the mighty MSSIAH cartridge, for programming drum loops and synth lines. Am currently beta testing a VST plug in that you can cantrol and program the MSSIAH from the PC or a VST host...makes making synth sounds a breeze....

Love it!

Have you looked into 8-bit music using chipsets?

There is a whole community of people who use gameboys etc with bootleg carts and all sorts of other crazy things to make 8 bit music. It sounds fantastic using the original hardware rather than emulating/reproducing it. There is all sorts of videos about it on youtube.

Have just recently got into "Goattracker" and produced a banging techno stomper for the commodore 64, and it sounds really meaty and fat on the real breadbin....lovelly filters! I will release a link when I have finished the final touches...

There's also MaxYMmiser on the ST if you can bear to use an Atari ST Max Smiley  3 channels of YM and SID sounds inc. some really nice buzzer effects and two channels of DMA sound if you want that extra oomph through 8Mhz+ samples.

(insert more appropriate signature here now that I've started to get rid of my Atari ST games!) Smiley

wise move, actually. Based on my sample size (fairly large), around 9 in 10 gameboys from car boots are actually broken. They're unfortunately very prone to dead lines, sometimes more dead ones than working ones.

Even on ebay, at least half of them are broken.

Unfortunately it's a colour only program - time to find a cheap LCD monitor with a SCART option Smiley

http://www.youtube.com/user/preromanbritain#p/u - YouTube channel for the creator of MaxYMiser.  It's got MIDI sync built in too so the possibilities could be quite endless for you in your studio set-up.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13NFRCuSiyQ - demo of (I think) a dance tune converted to the plain old 3-channel YM output synced to the original video.

Marcer (a good musician on the ST in Sweden) is on my FB friends list and I can introduce you if you want some help on the STE side of things for the extra two channels that become available.

Hiya, yeah thats really helpful, have a LCD with scart in the studio quite close to the ST aswell so that would not be a problem, I will look into all this when i get a little more time spare, am up to neck with various projects at the moment, but wil be a good thing to look into on down time, which I will, deffinatly, by all means put me onto your facebook friend... Cheers for your time...

awesome!
