Didnt the electron have that awful joystick interface sticking out the back that cut out if you touched it?

Thats the expansion port. Should have a plastic cover over it.

I don't know about best, but the by far most common appares to be the First Byte interface. It takes an Atari style joystick and comes with a tape with custom routines to be loaded into memory for a number of common Electron games.

I bought a such interface off eBay a couple of years ago, but sad to say I haven't plugged it into my Electron yet. Maybe one day...
