What are you working on?

Just curious - is anyone currently working on any programming projects for retro machines?

I'm in the early stages of programming a text adventure game for the Dragon 32 (and eventually, Apple //e) in assembly language. Which is amusing enough, but then there's the added bonus of repeatedly kicking "wor lass" to get to work on her share of the writing (as opposed to programming) bits.

And I'm planning a possible entry to Retrospectiva competition (also on Dragon 32) but my idea is not too original, I won't be putting too much effort in and so won't be winning. :)

You don't even want to get me started on hardware projects - but that's OT anyway.

just recently started work on a ram/rom checking program for a Data East Robocop PCB as it does no checking what so ever and my mate has a poorly one. Also just finished a tool to decrypt Capcom CPS2 roms so they can be used on a board with the battery removed and I dont have to rely on using Phoenix ROM's

Unfortunately nothing going on here with me . . . completely lost the will to code . . . and when I do it is all shite! :(

Want to code a version of "Cosmic Ark" on the C64, but am VERY rusty when it comes to assembler, so gonna take it nice and easy, and start with the basics, maybe get sprites displayed 1st then work from there.......gonna be a bit of a project, but will see how it goes.

Go for it. I hadn't done much assembly language for quite a while before starting this project and haven't found it too bad. In some ways it's quite easy since you're so limited in what you can do, it helps you keep focus. No searching through thousands of pages of MSDN looking for an under-documented library or routine, all you need is two sides of A4 - a memory map of the target computer, and list of CPU instructions.

Breaking every task down in to the smallest pieces you can really helps. I'm tending to concentrate on code readability etc. and using only registers and the stack for as much as possible - keeping things simple is allowing me to make quick progress, and the performance seems good.

Once you get back into the flow you'll be fine.

I'm working on a UI for the ZX81 AY players. Not especially glamorous but it needs to be done :¬.
This weekend I expect more SID type exploits at the Videolympics in Manchester.

The other week I implemented a VIC-20 variant of the bonus game from Tapper, to be used in a prize competition. Now I'm considering if I should implement the main game as well... ;)
